High Intensity
What a Disability Support Worker Does in Complex Care
Disability Support Workers (DSWs) are at the heart of Q1 Care’s complex care services. They provide the day-to-day support that allows participants with high health needs to live safely, comfortably, and with dignity in their own homes.
While DSWs are not nurses, they receive additional training and competency checks to deliver High Intensity Supports in line with NDIS requirements and individual care plans developed by health professionals.
Core Responsibilities of Disability Support Workers
Our Disability Support Workers are trained to:
- Carry out high intensity health tasks such as PEG feeding, tracheostomy support, catheter or stoma care, complex bowel care, wound and pressure area care, and supporting a participant with dysphagia.
- Monitor and record health changes, ensuring observations are documented and concerns are reported promptly to nursing staff or allied health professionals so care can be adjusted early and safely.

Supporting Daily Living
In addition to health-related tasks, DSWs also help participants with everyday activities that make life easier and more comfortable. This may include:
- Showering, grooming, and dressing
- Preparing meals and supporting safe eating
- Assisting with mobility and transfers
- Household tasks that maintain a safe living environment
- Medication prompts in line with care plans
These supports are always delivered in a way that promotes independence, dignity, and comfort.
Providing Social and Emotional Support
Complex care is not just about medical needs. Our DSWs also:
- Offer companionship and build positive relationships
- Support participants to attend appointments or community activities
- Encourage hobbies, interests, and social connections
This balance of clinical and personal support helps participants feel confident, connected, and valued.

Working as Part of a Care Team
Our Disability Support Workers do not work in isolation. They are part of a coordinated team that includes:
- Registered Nurses, who assess needs, write care plans, and provide oversight
- Allied health professionals, who contribute therapy and clinical guidance
- Families and participants, who share knowledge and goals
This teamwork ensures care is consistent, safe, and always person-centred.
Our Commitment
At Q1 Care, we are committed to making sure every Disability Support Worker delivering complex care is well-trained, supported, and confident in their role. By combining technical skills with compassion, our DSWs help participants live meaningful lives while their complex health needs are met safely and respectfully.
Every journey begins with a conversation.
