Restrictive Practice
Restrictive Practices and Behaviour Support
“When restrictive practices are needed, we make sure they are minimal, safe, and always guided by a clear plan.”
At Q1 Care, we know this can feel overwhelming and even daunting for families. The thought of restrictive practices being part of support can raise many concerns. That is why we are committed to ensuring they are only ever used as a last resort, always in the least restrictive way, and always in line with the NDIS Commission’s guidelines.
Our staff are specially trained to support your loved one with dignity and respect, while focusing on personal choice and long-term independence. The emphasis is never on restriction itself, but on building safe, positive strategies that reduce the need for restrictions over time.
What Are Restrictive Practices?
The NDIS Commission defines restrictive practices as any practice or intervention that limits the rights or freedom of movement of a person with disability. These may include:
- Seclusion – when a person is isolated from others.
- Chemical restraint – using medication to influence behaviour.
- Mechanical restraint – using a device to restrict movement.
- Physical restraint – holding a person to limit movement.
- Environmental restraint – restricting access to areas or items.

How Q1 Care Manages Restrictive Practices
- Always implemented under a Behaviour Support Plan developed by a registered Behaviour Support Practitioner.
- NDIS Commission authorisation is required, with state-specific rules followed at all times.
- Documented and reported each time they are used to ensure full transparency.
- Focused on reduction and elimination through positive strategies.
- Reviewed regularly in collaboration with families and professionals.
A Reassuring Word from Q1 Care
We understand that conversations about restrictive practices can feel confronting. Please know that at Q1 Care, our focus is always on your loved one’s safety, dignity, and personal choice. Restriction is never the first step, it is only used when absolutely necessary and always within a clear Behaviour Support Plan.
The Role of Support Workers
Our Disability Support Workers are trained to:
- Follow Behaviour Support Plans consistently and safely.
- Use restrictive practices only when directed, authorised, and documented.
- Monitor and record each use for compliance and review.
- Prioritise de-escalation and positive strategies before any restriction.
- Provide respectful, safe care that supports both the participant and their family.
Support Workers do not decide when restrictive practices are used. They implement what is outlined in the Behaviour Support Plan under professional guidance.

Our Commitment
At Q1 Care, restrictive practices are never seen as the solution, only as a temporary safeguard. We work closely with participants, families, and Behaviour Support Practitioners to ensure supports are always rights-focused and person-centred.
“At Q1 Care, your loved one’s rights, safety, and dignity will always guide the way we provide support.”
